Can I take my scooter with a lithium ion battery aboard an aircraft now. The dealer says I can, but I just want to make sure, before I make the investment.
In 2011 the new PHMSA rule allowed for the carriage of lithium ion batteries on passenger carriers. After that determination was made the DOT added “lithium ion powered scooters” to the ACAA, as something that US airlines must carry. They are still considered hazardous and very flammable, so different standards do apply to their acceptance. There are requirements for the inspection, stowage and acceptance of them, and most US carriers have outlined this on their website, so I encourage you to check with your carrier before you fly so you will be better prepared. Overseas, it varies, so again it’s best to check with the carrier before you book your flight.
