On March 16, 2016 Gondolas4All — a Venice-based public-private project — christened the city’s first accessible gondola pier. Located at Piazzale Roma, the pier features ramp access from the street, with lift access directly down to the gondola. Previously, some manual wheelchair-users had to be hand-carried aboard gondolas, while power wheelchair-users were excluded from the experience altogether. Now, thanks to Gondolas4All, everyone can ride.
Gondolas4All was co-founded by Gondolier Alessandro Dalla Pieta and Enrico Greifenberg. “A project like this has never been realized,” notes Greifenberg. “It’s a real innovation for Venice.”
Reservations are required for all accessible gondola rides. They must be made at least 24 hours in advance at firstname.lastname@example.org or +39 328 2431382. For more information about the Gondolas4All project, visit www.gondolas4all.com.
