Emerging Horizons Editor Contributes to Kids on Wheels
Ripon, CA — November 15, 2004 — Emerging Horizons editor, Candy Harrington recently put her accessible travel knowledge to work in a slightly different way — in a newly released book devoted exclusively to kids with disabilities. Published by No Limits Communications, Kids on Wheels breaks new ground in the field of disability publishing as it’s the first book that talks directly to (rather than “at”) wheelchair-using kids.
The book is published in two volumes: A Young Person’s Guide To Wheelchair Lifestyle (Vol. 1) and A Guide to Wheelchair Lifestyle for Parents, Teachers and Professionals (Vol. 2). Ms. Harrington’s accessible travel chapter appears the second volume.
Says Harrington, “It was a great experience for me as I got to interview a whole new crop of travelers — parents who travel with their wheeler kids. Although kids face some of the same access barriers as adults, planning a family-friendly vacation that is also accessible presents some very unique challenges.”
The travel chapter covers the secrets of enjoyable travel with kids on wheels, as well as up-to-date accessibility information on kid-friendly favorites from theme parks and campgrounds to science museums, zoos and interactive dolphin programs.
“My goal was to give parents options and ideas and to incorporate suggestions from parents who are old hands at accessible travel,” says Harrington. “Of course I had great editorial guidance from Jean Dobbs. She really put her heart into this title.”
Adds Harrington, “I also used the knowledge gained from this project to add a “Taking The Kids” chapter to the second edition of my Barrier-Free Travel title.”
Kids on Wheels (ISBN ISBN 0-9712842-3-7) is available from Leonard Media Group (888-850-0344, ext. 209) or at the Bookstore on newmobility.com
