Long known as the bratwurst capital of the world, Bucyrus celebrates this savory sausage this month during their annual Bratwurst Festival. Slated to run from August 18-20, 2005, this weekend festival is as much a celebration of the town’s German heritage as it is a tribute to the tasty sausage.

Years ago this Northern Ohio town was home to numerous bratwurst makers who hawked their goods from curbside stands. Today many of the manufacturers now have modern operations and bratwurst continues to top the menus of many local restaurants.

This hometown event begins when the Bratwurst Queen takes the traditional first bite of bratwurst and continues all weekend with parades, entertainment, arts and crafts, rides, games, a beer garden and of course plenty of bratwurst. In fact, tons of open fire roasted bratwurst are consumed during the festival.

Located one hour north of Columbus, Bucyrus has a number of accessible attractions including Cooper’s Mill and the Lowe Volk Nature Center. It also makes a great stop on the way to the Lake Erie shore. Even if you just stop for a bite to eat, be sure and save time for a look at the Eric Grohe murals in Washington Square and on St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Walnut Street.
