Celebrate Charm Days in Amish Country

Slated for October 7-8, 2005, Charm Days has become an annual event in Ohio Amish country. Located approximately 90 miles northeast of Columbus, the quaint community of Charm is home to one of the oldest Amish settlements in the US.

Several activities are scheduled throughout the weekend including a two day bake sale, a Saturday flea market, yard sales throughout town and a school benefit including old fashioned chili and fry pies. On Friday an old time fiddling program is held, while the big event on Saturday is a merchants’ auction.

During the two-day event, participating merchants also offer discount prices and specials to help celebrate the occasion. A grand prize drawing for $1000 is also held. All in all, it’s just a good old fashioned community event.

Autumn is the ideal time to visit Ohio Amish country as the fall colors are spectacular. The area around Charm is particularly scenic, especially State Route 557 between Charm and Farmerstown. Try and hit this drive in the afternoon, around 3 p.m., when all the Amish kids are walking home from school.

Ohio Amish country makes a great road trip, and despite the historic nature of the area, there are a number of accessible tourism choices. For more information about accessible attractions, restaurants and a great country inn in Ohio Amish country, consult the Fall 2005 issue of Emerging Horizons.
