America’s River Welcomes Historic Flotilla

Come celebrate the Mississippi River as Dubuque welcomes a steamboat flotilla to America’s River from June 27-29, 2004. This steamboat flotilla is part of Grand Excursion 2004, a year long event that celebrates the history of the Mississippi River by recreating an 1854 steamboat expedition.

Just as Grand Excursion 2004 celebrates the renaissance of the upper Mississippi region, America’s River in Dubuque celebrates the historical, environmental, educational and recreational majesty of the Big Muddy. This $188 million riverfront development project transformed the former Ice Harbor into a popular tourist attraction.

The cornerstone of America’s River, the Grand Harbor Resort, was unveiled in 2002. It was followed shortly by the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, the Mississippi Riverwalk and the Grand River Center. As with most port revitalization projects, Americas River introduced improved access along with new attractions.

Dubuque’s Grand excursion 2004 celebration will focus on the rich history and Victorian architecture of this classic river town. Local musicians will be featured at the riverside amphitheater, and food vendors and artisans will set up shop along the river. Stroll along the Mississippi Riverwalk and enjoy the steamboat flotilla, explore the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium or try your luck at the Diamond Jo Casino — the choice is yours at America’s River.
