Earlier this year the San Mateo County Parks Commission announced the completion of major accessibility improvements at Flood Park. The project represents a collaborative effort between the San Mateo Commission on Disabilities and the San Mateo County Parks Commission. It was funded by the county’s capital improvement ADA transition plan fund and Proposition 12.

This $350,000 project includes a new accessible entrance near the public transportation stop, accessible paths of travel, installation of two new accessible restrooms, accessible drinking fountains throughout the park and accessible picnic tables. This project serves as a model of accessibility that the San Mateo County Parks Commission would like use at other county parks.

Located just south of San Francisco, San Mateo County features a large number of city, county, and state parks and recreation areas. It’s a great place to get away from it all, yet it’s still conveniently close to an international airport. And as far a access goes, from the beaches to the redwoods, you’ll find a number of accessible outdoor options in this often overlooked stretch of Northern California real estate.
