United Airlines passengers can now rent Airshell containers to protect their wheelchairs and walkers, when departing from airports across the U.S. These containers were developed by a Danish company and have been in use across Europe, but they’ve only recently been introduced to the U.S. Although they are not rigid plastic, Airshells are made of a tough fabric, have a zipper, and have handles so that they can be safely lifted by baggage handlers. There are two sizes of Airshells; one for manual wheelchairs and walkers, and the other for power wheelchairs. The power wheelchair Airshell requires that the wheelchair be packed on its side, so it’s best to check with the manufacturer to make sure this is allowable. Passengers can make reservations for Airshells on-line and pick them up at passenger check-in. They can be returned to the baggage office upon arrival. The rental price for each Airshell is $25 per week. For more information, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or visit the Airshell website.
