European River Cruises are all the rage today; however wheelchair access aboard most riverboats is sorely lacking. Accessible Travel Netherlands fills that access void, with their wheelchair-accessible charter river cruises in Netherlands and Germany aboard the Prins Willem Alexander.
Unlike other companies, Accessible Travel Netherlands includes accessible shore excursions on all their river cruises. That said, Prins Willem Alexander is a former hospital ship, so it has shared bathroom facilities. To be fair, there are many toilets on the ship that can be used anytime — it’s just the shower facilities that are shared. And the feedback from former passengers is excellent. It’s the only truly accessible European riverboat cruise currently available.

Do it Yourself!
On the other hand, if you’d prefer an accessible riverboat cruise with a private bathroom, Accessible Travel Netherlands can also help you out in that respect. Just book your cruise on one of the “more accessible” riverboats and let Accessible Travel Netherlands handle all the shore excursions.
Emerald Waterways (emerald.rivercruise.com) and Scenic Cruises (www.scenicusa.com) have some ships that will work for many wheelchair-users and slow walkers. Both cruise lines offer riverboats that have elevators and accessible cabins with roll-in showers. It should be noted that pier access may vary depending on the river level and the slope of the gangway. Additionally, sometimes the riverboats dock next to one another and passengers have to pass through the adjacent riverboat to go ashore, and that’s not always possible for wheelchair-users.
Alternatively, consider an accessible European ocean cruises. Most of the large cruise lines including Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruise Lines offer excellent accessible cabins with roll-in showers on their European itineraries. Accessible shore excursions are still somewhat limited though, so you may want to also arrange them through Accessible Travel Netherlands.
