Wheelchair-Accessible Camping Cabins at Custer State Park

Although there’s no shortage of accessible lodging options in and around Custer State Park (gfp.sd.gov/parks/detail/custer-state-park/), there’s something to be said for foregoing the creature comforts and spending the night in a a more natural setting. That doesn’t mean you have to rough it though. Quite the contrary, as these wheelchair-accessible camping cabins at Custer State Park offer a number of modern amenities. And you just can’t beat the location — just a few miles north of the West Entrance to Wildlife Loop Drive in the Blue Bell Campground.

Comfortable Camping Cabins

To be honest, the Blue Bell Campground is easy to miss, as it’s hard to see the sign for it when you are heading south on Highway 87. The turn is located just past Blue Bell Lodge on the left– look for the stables. After you turn in, you’ll see the sign pointing to the campground. Just follow the sign to the camping cabins.

Cabins 14 and 15, which are located across from the showerhouse, are the wheelchair-accessible camping cabins. They each have a paved parking area in front, with level access over to the ramped front deck. The one-room cabins boasts a level threshold, a wide door and wood flooring for easy rolling. They are furnished with two 23-inch high bunk beds with room for a wheelchair between them. One lower bunk is a double, while the rest are twins. Linens are not provided so make sure and pack along some sheets or a sleeping bag. Other furnishings include a table and a bench, a storage shelf and a coat hook.

As an added bonus each cabin also has two electric outlets. overhead lighting, heating and air conditioning. Plus, there’s an accessible picnic table on the spacious deck, and a raised grill next to each cabin. And the cabins are located in a verdant pine forest, in a quiet campground.

There’s an accessible family shower in the showerhouse. It’s equipped with a roll-in shower with grab bars, a hand-held showerhead and a fixed shower bench. Other access features include a full five-foot turning radius, toilet grab bars on the back and right walls (as seated) and a roll-under sink.

Watchable Wildlife in Custer State Park

Although Custer State Park (gfp.sd.gov/parks/detail/custer-state-park/) is primarily known for its sizable bison population, this South Dakota favorite also boasts a healthy mixture of other wildlife. From prairie dogs and burros, to elk and even bighorn sheep, there’s no shortage of animal life in the park. And although Custer State Park occupies a whopping 71,000 acres of Black Hills real estate, the southern section of the park is the ground zero for watchable wildlife. Not only is the scenic Wildlife Loop Drive located in this section of the park, but there’s also a visitor center and the Bison Center along the way. And since it’s just a short drive from Badlands National Park, it’s a great addition to any South Dakota road trip.

The best place to start your wildlife adventure is at the Custer State Park Visitor Center, which is located at the intersection of Wildlife Loop Road and Highway 164. There’s accessible parking and level access to the main building, which houses exhibits and a theater. And if you need directions or have a few questions, there are plenty of folks available to help.

After you get your bearings, hop on the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Drive, which runs from the visitor center to the Bell Station Entrance. It takes about 45 minutes to complete the drive as the speed is limited to 25 mph; but that time is variable due to wildlife — especially bison — that sometimes linger on the road. Basically, you’re on their timetable — whenever they decide to move, so can you. But then again, that’s part of the fun.

There are lots of pullouts along the drive, and you can get some great windshield views without getting out of your vehicle. The route travels through pastures and forests, with a prairie dog village along the way. And be on the lookout for bighorn sheep which sometimes linger near the road. Then there are the feral burros, which can be overly curious and bold.

The Wildlife Station Visitor Center is located about eight miles from the beginning of the loop. Unfortunately the old CCC building only has steps up to it; however there are accessible vault toilets and an accessible inside picnic area near the parking area. Consider it a shady spot to stop for lunch.

Of course there are no guarantees on how much wildlife you’ll spot along Wildlife Loop Drive, but for optimum game viewing hit the road early in the morning or just before sunset.

Visit the Bison Center

Make sure and stop at the new Bison Center, which is located about two miles from the Wildlife Station Visitor Center. There’s accessible parking near the entrance, with level access to the building. Inside, there are exhibits which trace the history of the 1,500-head buffalo herd, which are descendants of the 36 head that were introduced in 1936. As the herd grew, it outgrew the available forage, so a yearly roundup (emerginghorizons.com/head-over-to-the-custer-buffalo-roundup/) was instituted to keep the population in check. Interactive exhibits at the Bison Center show how the buffalo are inoculated and what animals are sold, and how licensed hunters also help prevent overpopulation.

And if you’ve every wondered what the correct term is — buffalo or bison — there’s an exhibit which answers that question too. In short, both are considered correct. Buffalo is the French word for beef animal, while bison is the scientific name. And for the most part, buffalo is the preferred term in the park.

There’s also level access to the gift shop at the Bison Center, where you’ll find a number of buffalo-themed items. And there’s a level dirt path to the buffalo paddocks which are located on the far side of the parking lot. Take some time to check them out as you may see a few buffalo there; however there are more animals present at Buffalo Roundup time. All in all the Bison Center offers a good overview of one of the world’s largest publicly owned buffalo herds. Plan ahead though, as the Bison Center is only open from Memorial Day to the end of September.

Buffalo Roundup in Custer State Park, South Dakota

Although it sounds like something straight out of an old western movie, an honest to goodness buffalo roundup takes place every fall in Custer State Park. Granted, it’s the precursor to the fall buffalo sale, but it’s also a fun stand-alone event that’s open to the general public. Held on the last Friday in September, the Custer Buffalo Roundup (https://www.custerresorts.com/activities/buffalo-roundup) attracts wranglers from across the west who skillfully corral some 1,500 head of buffalo that reside on a 71,000 acre swath of Custer State Park. And it’s a sight to see — and hear — for sure. Even though this rustic event takes place in an open pasture, accommodations have also been made for wheelchair-users and slow walkers. So grab your cowboy hat, and get ready to hit the trail to see the Custer Buffalo Roundup.

Round ’em Up

Although the big round up officially begins at 9:30, you’ll want to get an early start. The two viewing locations along Wildlife Loop Road open at 6:15 AM. It should be noted that you need to choose your viewing area before you set out, as Wildlife Loop is closed to through traffic at the corrals. If you want to use the North viewing Area, then head south from the State Game Lodge on Wildlife Loop Road; and if you want to use the South Viewing Area, head east of Wildlife Loop Road near Blue Bell Campground.

Be sure and display your parking placard as you enter the lot, so you will be directed to the accessible parking area. From there, it’s just a short walk to a level viewing space, and accessible porta-potties. And if you are a slow walker, it’s a good idea to pack along a camp chair, as there’s no seating. Patrons are required to stay in the viewing areas until the buffalo are safely contained, which is usually around 11:30.

So what do you do while you wait for the roundup to begin? Well there’s the pancake breakfast for one. It’s held in a level area near the accessible parking, and to be honest, it’s nice to have a hot breakfast instead of a granola bar. There’s no seating, so you just take your meal back to your area. And then you can always chat and get to know your neighbors until you see the wranglers emerge on the horizon.

And then, there’s a great ruble over the plains, a bit of telltale dust, and with that the buffalo are herded past the crowd into their corrals. After that they are branded, examined and sorted, which the public is invited to watch.

Art, Music & More

After the buffalo are all rounded up, it’s time to head over to the Game Lodge area for the Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival. It actually runs from Thursday to Saturday, but it makes a good post-roundup choice. Here you’ll find hundreds of arts and crafts vendors, music and food.

Parking is available in a remote parking lot that is about a half-mile from the arts festival. That said, it’s a level walk on a paved sidewalk, so it’s doable for many wheelchair-users. Alternatively, there’s a wheelchair-accessible shuttle that runs from the remote parking lot to the arts fair. And there’s also a small accessible parking area close to the vendors, for anyone who just can’t manage the distance.

There’s level access around the 175 vendor tents, that have a wide range of art work, including many native made products. And at the end of the line there’s a place you can chow down on a bison burger and the fixins. Then, take some time to listen to some music for a relaxing afternoon.

Save some time to drive back down to the corrals later in the day, or even the next day. There’s accessible parking near the Bison Center, with level access to the dirt paths around the corrals. And although personal vehicles are prohibited in this area on roundup day, people with accessible parking placards are permitted to drive there. Alternatively, you can visit the corrals on the next day for a close look at the whole vaccination and examination process, as it takes about four days for staff to work the entire herd. It’s a good — and safe — opportunity for a close look at the resident buffalo during the Custer Buffalo Roundup.
