If you’re road tripping through Northern New Mexico, make sure and stop in Las Vegas, especially if you are a Harvey House aficionado. Head on over to the historic railroad depot first, which offers accessible parking and barrier-free access. Constructed in 1899, it’s still a working depot, and it also houses a small visitor information center. Next door the beautifully restored Castaneda Hotel is also worth a visit. There’s ramp access up to this former Harvey House, and level access around the lobby, which is dominated by a massive staircase. There’s elevator access to the second floor, which features 22 renovated rooms. There’s also level access to the downstairs bar, with barrier-free access to outside seating. Stop in and have a drink or some appetizers, and enjoy the view from the porch. And if you’d like to spend the night, room 204, which is wheelchair-accessible, is equipped with a roll-in shower.
Getting to and from your vacation destination is one thing, but getting around town without a car — especially if you use a wheelchair — can throw a wrench into even the best laid plans. That is, unless your vacation destination is Portland, Oregon, where accessible and affordable public transportation is abundant and easy to use. So here’s the skinny on how to get around town when you visit Portland in a wheelchair.
Ride the Streetcar
Getting around downtown Portland in a wheelchair is pretty easy, as there are wide sidewalks, plentiful curb-cuts and a fairly level terrain. Add in the Portland Streetcar (portlandstreetcar.org), which runs through the downtown area and connects to nearby business districts, and you have a very accessible way to see the city highlights.
The North – South Line runs from Nob Hill in the north, through the downtown area to the south waterfront; while the A and B loops circle the Lloyd District, Rose Quarter, Pearl District and downtown area. The A Loop runs in a clockwise direction, and the B Loop runs in a counterclockwise direction, so it’s easy to backtrack along the route.
Access is excellent on the Portland Streetcar, as every streetcar has has a ramp-equipped entrance. Boarding is a snap — just press the blue button to deploy the ramp, roll into one of the wheelchair-accessible seating areas and lock your brakes. When the streetcar arrives at your stop, push the blue button to deploy the ramp; and if you run into problems or have an emergency, just use the intercom near the accessible seating area.
Streetcar tickets can be purchased from machines at the platforms or at the Tri-Met ticket office in Pioneer Square. The fare for a 2.5-hour streetcar pass is $2, and the Hop pass (for the city bus) is also good on the streetcar.
Hop on a Bus
Getting around other areas of Portland in a wheelchair is easy too, thanks to the Tri-Met bus line (trimet.org/bus). Tri-Met buses run throughout the downtown area and connect with the Portland Streetcar, as well as offer access to outlying Portland neighborhoods. They are ramp or lift-equipped and many can also kneel, which makes boarding much easier for slow walkers. All buses have priority seating for disabled passengers and wheelchair tie-downs; and the drivers are happy to assist passengers — especially visitors.
If you need the ramp or lift deployed and you disability isn’t obvious, just ask the driver. Drivers are also available to help passengers on and off the the lift, and to secure assistive devices in the tie-downs.
Although Tri-Met buses accept cash, the best deal for visitors is the Hop card, which can be picked up and filled at the Tri-Met ticket office in Pioneer Courthouse Square. A 2.5-hour pass on the Hop card costs $2.80 and a day pass is $5.60 a day. Seniors and disabled passengers get a 50 percent discount, and if you decide to extend your stay in Portland, you can always add more money to your Hop card.
Airport Transfers
Getting to and from the Portland International Airport is easy too, thanks to MAX Rail (trimet.org/max), the city’s light rail system. It also connects downtown Portland with Beaverton, Clackamas, Gresham, Hillsboro, North/Northeast Portland and Milwaukie. And like the rest of Portland’s public transportation, all the MAX Rail lines are wheelchair-accessible.
All MAX Rail trains have accessible boarding areas, which are located in the center of the low-floor cars. The conductor will deploy the ramp for wheelchair-users, but slow walkers can also deploy the ramp by pressing the blue button. The accessible cars all have large accessible seating areas, and a ramp request button next to the doors.
The Hop card is also good on MAX Rail, and it can be purchased or refilled from machines at the station. The MAX Rail Airport Station is located near baggage claim on the lower level
Taxi Tours of Portland in a Wheelchair
Finally, if you’d prefer to just grab a cab, then contact Radio Cab (radiocab.net) for wheelchair-accessible service. Radio Cab offers 24-hour taxi service in lift-equipped vans, throughout the Portland Area. And the fares are the same as standard taxi fares.
Radio Cab also offers accessible day tours of the city with stops at Washington Park, the Rose Gardens, the Japanese Gardens and the Columbia River Gorge. Although the Grand Canyon is a bit off the the beaten path, it is possible to visit this national treasure without a car. Of course you can always book a package tour, but if you would like to explore on your own, then rail travel is your best bet. There are a still number of options even with Amtrak, but here’s the best way for wheelchair-users and slow walkers to explore the Grand Canyon without a car.
Ride the Rails
Amtrak Southwest Cheif
The Amtrak Southwest Chief (www.amtrak.com/southwest-chief-train), which offers daily service between Los Angeles and Chicago is the most direct way to get to the Grand Canyon by rail. Although theoretically you can depart from any station along this route, it’s best to depart from Los Angeles because of the timing of the trains. This eastbound train arrives in Flagstaff in the early morning, in plenty of time to catch the first wheelchair-accessible shuttle to the Grand Canyon. The westbound train, on the other hand, arrives in the evening, well after the last shuttle has departed.
There’s good wheelchair access at the Los Angeles and Flagstaff stations, with level access or lift boarding to the trains. Accessible restrooms are available on the train, and wheelchair-users can either transfer to a coach seat or stay in their own wheelchair for the duration of their journey. The Southwest Chief also has an accessible bedroom on the lower level of the train. Although it can be a tight fit for some large wheelchairs, this compartment has more space than a standard one. It also has an accessible toilet and sink. And the best part about traveling in the accessible bedroom is that it comes with complimentary meals and room service.
Groome Transportation (groometransportation.com/grand-canyon) offers accessible shuttle service from the Flagstaff Amtrak Depot to Maswik Lodge in the Grand Canyon. Advance reservation are required, and accessible vehicle requests must be made at least 24 hours in advance.
Alternatively, if you’d like to ride the rails all the way to the Grand Canyon, you can take the Grand Canyon Railway (www.thetrain.com) from Williams. This route involves an additional transfer in an Amtrak Thruway bus from the Flagstaff Amtrak Depot to the Grand Canyon Railway Depot. That said, it’s the preferred route for real rail buffs.

Explore the South Rim

Once you get to the South Rim, it’s easy to explore the Grand Canyon without a car. After you drop off your luggage at Maswik Lodge, just hop aboard the free park shuttle bus. All shuttle buses are equipped with ramps and they can kneel to accommodate slow walkers. They can accommodate wheelchairs up to 30 inches wide and 48 inches long.
The best way to begin your visit is to take the Village Shuttle over to the Visitor Center. Pick up a map and browse through the exhibits, then take the accessible paved path out to Mather Point for a superb view of the Colorado River and the South Kaibab Trail. Then hop back on the Village Shuttle and get off at Bright Angel an enjoy more canyon views from the Rim Trail. You can do as little or as much this trail as you like, and even stop for a lunch break at one of the rim lodges.
After you’ve explored the rim take the Hermits Rest Shuttle, which stops at the west end of the Rim Trail. The bus travels down the seven mile stretch of Hermit Road to the infamous Mary Colter designed roadside rest. There are nine canyon overlooks along the way, but two must-stops are Hopi Point and Mojave Point. Hopi Point is the highest point along the route, and Mojave Point has a quarter-mile accessible trail that boasts impressive canyon views.
Last but not least, book a accessible Desert View Bus Tour (grandcanyonlodges.com/plan/interpretive-bus-tours). This four-hour tour covers the entire length of Desert View Drive and stops several viewpoints along the way. Plan ahead though, as 48 hours advance notice is required for an accessible bus.
Spend the Night
Although most of the properties inside Grand Canyon National Park have accessible rooms, the accessible shuttle from Flagstaff only stops at Maswik Lodge (grandcanyonlodges.com/lodging/maswik-lodge), so it’s the most convenient way to do the Grand Canyon without a car.
There’s barrier-free access to the lobby of this motel-style property, with level access over to the front desk. The property is spread out between buildings dotted throughout a pine forest, with parking located right outside the rooms. They have accessible rooms that are equipped with either a tub/shower combo or a roll-in shower.
Room 6761 is located near the main lodge in the Cliffrose Building. There’s accessible parking in front, with level access to the room. Other access features include wide doorways, a lowered peephole, lever handles and a lowered closet rod. It’s furnished with two 23-inch high queen-sized beds, with wheelchair access between them, a chest of drawers, a table with two chairs, and a refrigerator. It also has a sliding glass door, with level access out to a small patio area.

The bathroom has a roll-in shower with grab bars, a hand-held showerhead and a fold-down shower bench. The toilet grab bars are located on the back and left walls (as seated), and the bathroom also has a roll-under sink and a lowered mirror.

Room 6742, which is located in the Spruce Building, has the same general access features and bed configuration as room 6761, except that the bathroom is equipped with a tub/shower combination, with grab bars and a portable shower chair.

Additionally, there’s barrier-free access to all the public areas of Maswik Lodge, including the restaurants, gift shop and lobby area. It’s a comfortable property, and a great home base for an accessible Grand Canyon without a car visit.

Although there’s no train station in Yosemite National Park, with a little advance planning it is possible to plan a wheelchair-accessible Yosemite rail excursion. Here’s what you need to know to ride the rails to Yosemite National Park.
Hop Aboard Amtrak

The best way to take a wheelchair-accessible Yosemite rail excursion is to hop aboard Amtrak’s San Joaquins. This route runs through the Central Valley from Oakland to Bakersfield, and offers Thruway bus connections from Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Francisco. The train also stops in Emeryville, Richmond, Martinez, Antioch, Lodi, Stockton, Modesto, Denair, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Hanford, Corcoran and Wasco. And it’s easy to transfer to Yosemite via YARTS at the Merced Amtrak Station.
All Amtrak trains feature ramp or lift boarding, wheelchair-accessible seating and large accessible restrooms. Wheelchair-users can remain in their own wheelchair or transfer to a coach seat for the journey. The San Joaquins can accommodate manual and power wheelchairs up to a maximum width of 29.5 inches, and an occupied weight of up to 600 pounds. Amtrak Thruway buses are accessible with 48 hours advance notice. Special accessibility requests can be submitted at www.amtrak.com/contact-us/email.html (click on accessibility request) at least 72 hours prior to travel, or by calling (800) 872-7245. On-the-spot accessibility requests can usually be accommodated if they do not present a safety issue.

Take YARTS to Yosemite

Passengers who want to take a wheelchair-accessible Yosemite rail excursion should buy a round- trip Amtrak ticket to Merced. It’s about a three-hour trip from Oakland, and a two-hour trip from Bakersfield; plus an additional, 3.5-hour Thruway bus connection from Bakersfield to Los Angeles. Although Amtrak has partnered with YARTS to provide a bus connection from the Merced Amtrak Station to Yosemite, wheelchair-users should book this segment of the journey directly with YARTS to insure accessibility.
All YARTS buses feature lifts and accessible seating; however since accessible seating is limited, access cannot be guaranteed unless you purchase an advance ticket at yarts.com. It’s also important to note on your Amtrak reservation that wheelchair-accessible seating is required. Alternately, call (877) 989-2787 at least 48 hours in advance to secure an accessible seat. Additionally, reduced fares are available to people with a disability and seniors over 62 years old.
The Highway 140 YARTS route runs from the Merced Amtrak Station to Yosemite Valley with stops in Catheys Valley, Mariposa, Midpines and El Portal. Stops in Yosemite Valley include the Yosemite Valley Visitor Center, Yosemite Valley Lodge and Curry Village. This route runs year-round, and it takes 2.5 hours to get from the Merced Amtrak station to Yosemite Valley.
The Highway 140 YARTS route is an excellent choice for folks with lodging reservations at Yosemite Valley Lodge or Curry Village; however this route also stops at accessible properties outside of the park. Two excellent accessible lodging choices on the route are the Yosemite Bug and AutoCamp Yosemite.
The Yosemite Bug (www.yosemitebug.com/) is located in Midpines and features a large wheelchair-accessible guest room with a roll-in shower. Located nearby, AutoCamp Yosemite (autocamp.com/location/yosemite/) offers wheelchair-accessible accommodations in custom designed luxury travel trailers. And both properties have daily YARTS connections to the national park.
Getting Around Yosemite
Yosemite Shuttle
Passengers who take a wheelchair-accessible Yosemite rail excursion have several options to get around the park. First and foremost is the free Yosemite shuttle system.
There are currently two shuttle routes in the valley — the Valleywide Shuttle and the East Valley Shuttle. The former stops at Yosemite Valley lodges, campgrounds, restaurants and trailheads, while the latter calls on Yosemite Village, Curry Village, the Pines Campgrounds and the eastern Yosemite Valley trailheads. All shuttle buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts and tie-downs, and can accommodate wheelchairs up to 24 inches wide and 46 inches long. The lifts have a weight limit of 750 pounds.
Aramark (www.travelyosemite.com) — a Yosemite lodging concessionaire — also operates several tours. The popular Valley Floor Tour is conducted in an open-air tram and offers good views of the surrounding landscape. Although not all trams are accessible, wheelchair-users can request a lift-equipped one with 48 hours notice. And if you’d like to explore more of the park, opt for four-hour Glacier Point Tour or the day-long Yosemite Grand Tour. Accessible buses for these tours are also available with 48 hours advance notice.
Finally, if you’d like to get a little exercise, then rent a handcycle at the bike stands at Yosemite Valley Lodge or Curry Village and explore the 12 miles of bicycle paths in Yosemite Valley. Most of the bicycle paths are wheelchair-accessible except for a short patch near Housekeeping Camp.
So leave the car at home, and get out and ride the rails to Yosemite National Park. It’s a fun and wheelchair-accessible way to travel.
Barrier-Free Travel Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks for Wheelers and Slow Walkers
Located about 240 miles north of Anchorage and 120 miles south of Fairbanks, Denali National Park (www.nps.gov/dena/index.htm) is one of the crown jewels of the 49th State. One of Alaska’s eight national parks, Denali occupies just over six million acres of wild land bisected by a seasonal road. And if all that sounds a bit rugged for your taste, rest assured it is possible to plan a wheelchair-accessible Denali visit. Granted, scaling the 20,310 namesake mountain may not be on your to-do list; however the park also offers a nice selection of wheelchair-accessible trails, attractions and tours suitable for non-mountaineering visitors.
Getting There
A top concern about a wheelchair-accessible Denali National Park visit is actually getting to the park. Although there’s no airport there, Denali is easily accessible by rail and car. The peak visit time is from late May through early September, but that’s primarily because of the train schedules and the unpredictable weather. Still if you have a vehicle, and a bit of a sense of adventure, late spring and fall can also be beautiful times to enjoy Mother Nature’s majesty in Denali.
Alaska Railroad
Daily train service is available from Anchorage and Fairbanks on Alaska Railroad’s (www.alaskarailroad.com) Denali Star during the summer months. The northbound train departs from Anchorage, and takes three hours to get to Denali. It stops in Wasilla and Talkeetna along the way. The southbound Fairbanks to Denali nonstop route takes four hours to get to Denali. And the good news is, all the stations include lift boarding, and the GoldStar Dome Cars feature elevator access, accessible seating and accessible lavatories downstairs. Additionally, most of the major cruise lines also offer cruise tour packages that include a Denali stop, on their own accessible railcars.
If you’d prefer to drive, accessible rental vans are available in Anchorage from Alaska Mobility (www.alaskamobility.com). After you pick up your van, just hop on The George Parks Highway (Highway 3). Also designated as a National Scenic Byway, this well traveled route runs between Fairbanks and Anchorage, and offers access to the park. The drive on this well maintained paved road is doable in a day from Anchorage; but plan for extra time as there’s no shortage of viewpoints and roadside stops along the way. Wheelchair-Accessible Denali Shuttles

Another wheelchair-accessible Denali feature is the free accessible shuttle bus system. After the winter snow is cleared in late spring, the road into Denali National Park is open to private vehicles to the Savage River area. Transportation further into the park is only available from concessionaires, and it’s largely dependent on road conditions.
That said, the free shuttle bus system operates in the Riley River area near the park entrance, and in the Savage River area 15 miles down the road. And all of the shuttle buses and shuttle bus stops wheelchair-accessible. The Savage River Loop and the Riley Creek Loop shuttles run all day and stop at a number of trails and attractions along the way. The Sled Dog Demonstration Shuttle, which runs from the Denali Visitor Center to the sled dog kennels, departs 40 minutes prior to the demonstrations, and returns shortly after they are completed.

Printed schedules are not available in the park, and cell phone service is limited, so it’s best to save a screen shot of the schedule for planning purposes.
Riley Creek Hikes
McKinley Station Trail
If you’d like to try a hike in the Riley Creek area, then hop on the shuttle, get off at the Riley Creek Campground and explore the McKinley Station Trail. This 1.6-mile hard-packed dirt trail runs from the campground to the visitor center. Although it’s not completely level, it offers an undulating — and accessible — route through the forest. There are also a few accessible boardwalk sections along the way. Be forewarned though — there’s a short cut to the visitor center about half-way along the route, but it goes straight uphill. Stick to the original trail for a gradual accessible path to the visitor center.
If you’d prefer a shorter walk, check out the Spruce Forest Loop, which is located right behind the visitor center. This .15-mile trail meanders through the forest, and offers visitors a good introduction to the vegetation and wildlife found in the park. It’s also very convenient, as you can just take the shuttle to the visitor center and hop on the trail from there.

The Sled Dog Demonstration is another wheelchair-accessible Denali must-do. Although accessible shuttle service is available from the visitor center, you can also drive over to the kennels. There’s plenty of accessible parking available at the kennels; however it’s a longer jaunt from the parking lot than it is from the bus stop, so slow walkers might want to opt for the shuttle. It should also be noted that the Roadside Trail that runs from the visitor center to the kennels has a steep grade and numerous obstructions, and it’s definitely not an accessible option to get to the kennels.
The sled dog demonstration is fun to watch, as the team is hitched to a wheeled sled that speeds around a dirt track. Accessible seating for wheelchair-users and slow walkers is available in the front, so everyone is guaranteed a good view. A ranger is on hand to answer questions about the sled dogs — which are still used in the winter in the park — and folks can walk though the sled shed and around the kennels after the demonstration. Best of all, there’s no charge for this educational demonstration.
Savage River Hikes
Mountain Vista Trail
Last but not least, save some time to explore the Savage River area of the park, which offers a few accessible trails, and some great scenery. The shuttle stops at the Mountain Vista and Savage trailheads; and if Mount Denali is “out” (not obscured by cloud cover), you’ll get a great view from several vantage points along the way.
The Mountain Vista Trail is the most accessible trail in the area. This .6-mile hard-packed dirt trail begins near the shuttle stop, behind the accessible vault toilets and picnic shelter. It winds through the tundra, and offers several impressive views of the Alaska Range along the way. And you never know what wildlife you’ll run across, so keep your ryes peeled. Pack along a picnic lunch and enjoy it at one of the accessible tables at the picnic shelter, while you wait for the shuttle to Savage River.
Savage Cabin Trail
The shorter Savage Cabin Loop begins just to the left of the Savage River Campground shuttle bus stop, near the accessible vault toilet. The .3-mile loop is fairly level — with a few undulations — and is covered in compacted gravel. Midway along the route, you’ll find a historic cabin that was constructed by the Alaska Road Commission in 1924. It was originally used as a ranger cabin, but today it’s an interpretive site. Although the cabin isn’t accessible, you can still get a good glance at the inside from the doorway. And the docent programs are usually presented outside, in an accessible space. Even if there aren’t any docents at the cabin it still make a nice stop on this short jaunt.

Of course, the final piece of the access puzzle in Denali National Park is lodging. There are no hotels or lodges in the park, but the campground has accessible spaces, and there are a number of accessible lodging choices nearby. Train travel has many advantages. You can leave the driving to someone else and sit back and enjoy the scenery. When nature calls you can just roll down the aisle to an accessible restroom. And if you get hungry there are many tasty onboard choices. Additionally, unlike auto travel, you can also enjoy an adult beverage during your journey. And the good news is, not only does Amtrak offer wheelchair-accessible seating, but they also give disabled passengers a 10% discount off their fares. Ready to ride the rails? Then here’s how to book a wheelchair-accessible seat on Amtrak.
Check That Box!
Making a reservation for a wheelchair-accessible seat is pretty straightforward; however there is one critical component to the process. Go to www.Amtrak.com and enter your departure station, your destination and your travel dates. On the next line, select the number of travelers, and then check the box that says “passenger with disability or assistance needed”. It’s easy to miss, but it’s an essential step in order to get an accessible seat.
After you check that box, a disability assistance questionnaire will appear. The first window asks about your disability, while the second window asks if you need an Amtrak wheelchair, or if you travel with a wheelchair or a cane. The third window determines your accessible seating preference, as it asks if you want to travel in your manual wheelchair, stow your collapsible wheelchair on board, or if you use a power wheelchair or scooter. The next window asks about service animals, and the final window has a few questions about station assistance. And if you need assistance with something not listed, you can always give them a call at (800) USA-RAIL to have it added to your profile
After that you can select your train from the displayed choices and complete your reservation. If you are on a reservable train, you will automatically be assigned the accessible seating choice you selected. If you are traveling on a non-reservable train, then it will alert personnel to your accessible seating needs. If, on the other hand, you didn’t check the “disability box”, neither of these things will happen; and you won’t get an accessible seat.
If Things Go Wrong
Of course, sometimes people miss the check box and end up not being able to select a wheelchair-accessible seat on Amtrak. That was the case with one recent passenger on the Acela train out of New Jersey. He missed the check box and was assigned a standard seat. Since he needed an accessible seat he tried the online chat option to resolve the issue. The only solution they offered was to cancel his original reservation and rebook him in an accessible seat. Unfortunately, since the fare had gone up since he initially booked his ticket, he would of been charged nearly double his original fare just to get an accessible seat. It’s not Amtrak’s policy to charge disabled passengers more for an accessible seat, but the chat option just didn’t resolve things.
So the passenger reached out to everyone he could and eventually he worked his way up the ladder. Ultimately he was rebooked in an accessible seat at no additional charge, but it did take a lot of legwork on his part.
In the end, it’s important to remember that when you book a wheelchair-accessible seat on Amtrak it will be the same price as a standard seat. If you find that isn’t the case, or if you have been charged extra for an accessible seat in the past, then it’s time to contact Amtrak. According to an Amtrak spokesperson, they will make it right. They are adamant about not only going the extra mile to provide disabled passengers with accessible seating and assistance; but they also do it for the same price that non-disabled passengers pay.
